Experiment 2 - Life after People.

Experiment 2: Life after People.

For this assignment, the building I chose to model is the Sao Paulo Museum of contemporary Art designed by Lina bo Bardi. What intrigued me about the building itself was the two massive semi rectangular shaped pillars that embody the structure. My initial thought was that it would be interesting to see how this building would shape itself, hundred years from now after human abandonment.

My approach to this project was driven by the works of Rob Sheridan, David Fincher and Paul Greengrass. Paul Greengrass's shaky camera technique and David Fincher's use of dark and low light photography formed the basis for the way I would present my assignment through the video. Rob Sheridan, who is a personal influence on me, has continued to inspired me through out the years. His photography, while being unique and intriguing, focuses on distorted content. It is because of these extremely creative individuals that I was able to develop my style approach for this project.

The Island.

Concept:

The concept for my island was inspired from the movies 'The Machinist' and 'Metropolis', what both these movies had in common was the effects of Industrialisation and Technological advancement. I remember first watching Metropolis and being intrigued by Fritz Lang's technique to visually communicate ideas without the use of dialogue.

My island encapsulates the idea of a human face being divided amongst two different aspects of technology and its influence. The green side of the island represents recovery and the human race persevering and adapting to the technological advancements, while the red side represents a dying human race being absorbed by technology.

The island itself is encased in a green house, I chose to model my island around the idea of entrapment where even though an individual is aware of the need to escape from technology and break through. The metaphorical idea of a green house, which represents the illusion of safety and concealment from the outside world, forces individuals to deny the urge to escape. With the advancement of the Social media, it is common practice to conceal oneself behind a computer screen and form a virtual representation of their personality, which gives people a sense of safety because they feel more in control and less challenged. Where as in the outside world, one is exposed and hence every human emotion is visible and hence concealing one's personality and hiding behind the 'metaphorical' safely of a computer screen isn't possible.

The island is a representation of the juxtaposition of the idea for the need to break free and explore the world but at the same time denying the urge to do so and preferring the safety of technology.
